Football: Rhinelander 28, Wausau East 14
The Rhinelander High School football team dug out from an early hole to score 28 unanswered points and defeated Wausau East 28-14 Friday night at Thom Field.
The Hodags turned the football over on their first two drives, which resulted in short fields and a pair Xander Klein touchdown passes for Wausau East in the first 4:10 of the contest.
Rhinelander got within a score at the break thanks to a Sam Zwaard 2-yard score midway through the second quarter, tied it early in the third on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Abe Gretzinger to Ben Olson and took the lead on Zwaard’s second touchdown run of the night later in the third. Cyrus Leisure capped off a 14-play, 95-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
The Hodags had three players rush for more than 90 yards — Leisure (15-116), Olson (18-108) and Zwaard (12-92). Olson added a team-high 63 yards on three grabs. Gretzinger was 5 of 16 passing for 79 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
