RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Sept. 9
Volleyball: Antigo 3, Rhinelander 1
Antigo defeated Rhinelander in four sets 25-21, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13 in GNC play Tuesday night in Antigo.
Ava Rathbun led the Hodags with eight kills and 17 digs while Olivia Ruetz had five kills. Kylie Treder had 18 assists. Tori Stella had three service aces.
Rhinelander (1-11, 0-2 Great Northern) travels to Prentice Thursday for a triangular.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 4, Pacelli 3
The RHS girls’ tennis team picked up another big win in Great Northern Conference dual meet play Tuesday, knocking off previously unbeaten Pacelli 4-3 in Stevens Point.
The Hodags swept doubles in the win with the teams of Teagan Turcotte/Maddie Legrey, Willow VanDenHeuvel/Eva Heck and Willow Mutter/Addy Currie scoring straight-set wins. Lucy Evers won at No. 4 singles, picking up the point the Hodags needed from that side of the lineup to secure the dual meet win.
Rhinelander (11-7, 4-1 Great Northern) hosts Merrill on Thursday.
Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 92, Stevens Point 78
Stevens Point edged Rhinelander in the win column 6-5, but the Hodags’ depth carried the night in a 92-78 victory over the Panthers in a non-conference matchup Tuesday at the Heck Family Community Pool that pitted the reigning girls’ swim champs in the Great Northern and Wisconsin Valley against one another.
Emma Houg led a 1-2-3 finish for the Hodags in the 200-yard freestyle. Millie Gruett took the 100 butterfly, Riley Mickevicius claimed the 500 freestyle and Vivian Lamers took the 100 breaststroke. June Chiamulera, Ella Heck, Gruett and Lamers made up the winning quartet for Rhinelander in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Hodags (3-0, 2-0 Great Northern) travel to Tomahawk Thursday for a GNC double dual that will also include Colby/Abbotsford.
Cross country: RHS boys 5th/12, girls 8th/13, Marshfield Invite
Rhinelander had individual top-10 finishers in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Marshfield Invite Tuesday at Wildwood Park.
Avrom Barr scored a runner-up finish on the boys’ side, covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds. Rhinelander took fifth on the boys’ side as a team. Jackson Weinzatl was 17th, Jonathan Campbell finished 34th, Michael Brunette was 39th and Grant Gremban was 58th.
Macy Myers paced the Hodag girls with a seventh-place run (20:35) as Rhinelander finished eighth overall with a short-handed squad. Kara Monk was 22nd, Gretchen Fiebke placed 53rd, Morgan Cahee was 84th and Emily Schiek was 86th.
The Hodags are back in action Saturday at the Stevens Point Invite.
