Michael Lee Smith, 73, passed away on September 1, 2025, at his home in Bloomington, Ill. surrounded by his family in the loving care of Carle Hospice.

Born on December 14, 1951, Michael graduated from Oshkosh High School and went on to build a dedicated career as a union painter. Living in Rhinelander, he shared his skills and work ethic as an instructor for Job Corp, helping others find their path through hands-on learning and mentorship.

Michael was deeply family-oriented. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Kathleen; daughters Wendy (Daniel), Tara, and Holly (Jesse); and grandchildren Alexander, Isabella, Elizabeth, Hope, Paige, Tyler, Haile, and Connor. He is also survived by his brother, Dennis. His legacy lives on in the warmth of their memories and the strength of their bonds. He was preceded in death by his parents Joan and William.

Michael enjoyed camping with his friends and family. After retirement, he and Kathy became snowbirds — spending summers camping in Wisconsin and winters at their home in Florida. He loved trying his luck at the casino and taking cruises with friends and family to explore new Caribbean destinations. One of his favorite pastimes was watching ships pass through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, a quiet reflection of his deep appreciation for history. Known for his sense of humor and playful spirit, he gave everyone a nickname and brought laughter wherever he went.

A private memorial service will be held for immediate family according to Michael’s wishes. Contributions may be made to Carle Hospice at Carle Health Center for Philanthropy in his memory and mailed to: Carle Home Health Services, 207 Landmark Drive, Suite C, Normal, IL 61761.
