RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Sept. 4
Boys’ soccer: Lakeland 7, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team fell to defending GNC-champion Lakeland 7-0 Thursday night at Mike Webster Stadium.
The T-Birds scored three times in the first half and four more in the second. Lakeland unofficially had a 27-2 advantage in shots on goal. Caden Ehrhardt made 20 saves for Rhinelander in the loss.
The Hodags (0-3-0, 0-1-0-0 Great Northern) host Wausau East on Saturday.
Volleyball: Tomahawk 3, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School girls’ volleyball team was swept by Tomahawk 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 in the GNC opener Thursday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Ava Rathbun, Olivia Ruetz an Cassidy Lindner each had four kills to lead Rhinelander. Kylie Treder had nine assists. Maddie Paulson had 12 digs and also recorded four service aces.
Rhinelander (1-10, 0-1 Great Northern) travels to Antigo on Tuesday.
Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 119, Medford 53; Rhinelander 122, Antigo 35
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team claimed eight of 11 events Thursday as it took both legs of a GNC double dual — defeating Medford 119-53 and Antigo 122-35 — at the Heck Family Community Pool.
Ella Heck was a four-event winner for the Hodags, taking the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, individually. She was also on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams. Vivian Lamers and June Chiamulera won the 50 and 100 freestyle, respectively, and were both on two winning relays. Rylee Mickevicus added a win in the 200 freestyle and seven Hodags scored wins in all.
Rhinelander (2-0 Great Northern) will host Stevens Point and Mosinee in a non-conference double dual on Tuesday.
Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander 5, Medford 2
The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team made a statement in the Great Northern Conference race by defeating previously unbeaten Medford 5-2 Thursday at the RHS tennis courts.
The Hodags swung the dual in their direction by winning all three matches that went to decisive match tiebreakers. Annie Vander Galien scored a 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 win over Tallula Hahn at No. 1 singles, Lucy Evers prevailed 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 over Raylin Rothmeier at No. 4 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Addy Currie and Willow Mutter defeated Uliah Etsitty and Averie Werner 7-5, 4-6, 10-7.
Rhinelander also got straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles from Jordan Manske and Taylor McKinney.
Rhinelander (10-7, 3-1 Great Northern) travels to Stevens Point Pacelli on Tuesday.
Girls’ golf: Rhinelander 1st/3, Rhinelander Invite
The Rhinelander High School girls’ golf team defeated a couple of varsity reserve squads from Wausau West on Thursday as it hosted a nine-hole match at Northwood Golf Club.
The Hodags went 1-2-3 individually in the meet. Neveah Anderson shot 58 to win by four strokes over teammate Claire Yunkers. Ella Miljevich was one shot further back with a 63. Karlie Yunkers and Hayley Schiek each shot 77 and Lindsey Hoerchler carded a 78.
Rhinelander won the team event by 22 strokes over Wausau West-1.
The Hodags are back in action Monday in an invite in Stevens Point.
