RHS Sports recap: Sept. 5-6

Football: Lakeland 43, Rhinelander 32


The Rhinelander High School football team couldn’t slow down Lakeland in the second half and fell 43-32 to the T-Birds Friday in the 11th annual Northwoods Axe Game at Mike Webster Stadium.


Rhinelander went up 32-29 with 8:55 remaining on Abe Gretzinger’s fourth touchdown pass of the night, an 11-yard connection to Rowan Wiczek, but the T-Birds answered on a Logan Burrows TD with 6:42 remaining and the T-Birds added a clinching touchdown in the final minute.


Gretzinger threw for 245 yards on 15 of 27 passing. Wiczek and Evan Shoeder had 113 and 101 receiving yards, respectively, and both had two touchdowns. Cyrus Leisure had 71 yards on the ground, including a 54-yard score on the Hodags’ opening drive. 


Deklan McQuade threw for 187 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Lakeland. Evan Zoch had eight catches for 132 yards and a score. He also returned a 20-yard fumble return for a score early in the second quarter. Fullback Justin Doud-Sero added three touchdown runs for Lakeland.


Rhinelander (1-2, 0-1 Great Northern) travels to Wausau East next Friday.


Boys' soccer: Wausau East 5, Rhinelander 0


The RHS boys' soccer team dropped a home non-conference game to Wausau East 5-0 on Saturday at Mike Webster Stadium.


Statistics and further details from the game had not been provided as of the time of this post.


Rhinelander (0-4-0, 0-1-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee on Monday.
