Eugene E. Novak “Gene,” 82, of Rhinelander, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, October 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born on February 1, 1943, in Rhinelander, to Emil F. and Laura R. (Bishop) Novak. He graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1961. Gene was a well-known automotive salesman in Rhinelander for 46 years and truly enjoyed what he did.

Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed biking and walking with his wife, Barb. One of Gene’s favorite pastimes was spending time with his family. He was known for his sense of humor and always had a good joke to tell.

Gene was a devout Catholic, attending mass at Nativity of Our Lord Parish. He and Barb participated in a memorable mission trip to Honduras.

Surviving is his loving wife, Barb, of 56 years, daughter Paula (Lars) Larsen of Pewaukee, dear grandchildren William and Ava, sisters Donna Kohlbeck of Rhinelander and Beverly Johnson of Salt Lake City and Barb’s family: Thomas (Stephanie) Dalka, Dennis (Annette) Dalka, Patricia Dalka (Alan Mancl), Richard Dalka, Gregory Dalka, Audrey Price (Kurt Metz), Gary (Lynne) Dalka, and George (Lisa) Dalka all of Rhinelander and many nieces and nephews.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Lisa, brother Bud, and brothers-in-law, Vern Kohlbeck and Pete Johnson.

Gene was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be cherished forever by his family.

The visitation for Gene will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Parish, 125 E. King Street, from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial. Fr. Chris Kemp will officiate.

Immediately following the mass, there will be a procession to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery for the committal service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Gene may be given to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Parish or Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School.

Gene’s family would like to extend a special thank you to those who were involved in Gene’s care, including nurse Jen and staff from Aspirus Hospice and Toni and Tim from Stay Home Instead. A very special thank you to Fr. Chris Kemp for his pastoral care during this journey.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hildebrand Funeral Home & Cremation Specialists, 24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, 54501, 715-365-4343. Everyone is invited to leave an online condolence at www.hildebrandrussfh.com.
