Boys’ soccer: Medford 1, Rhinelander 1 (Medford wins PKs, 6-5)
The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team was eliminated by Medford in penalty kicks, 6-5, after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal Tuesday at Mike Webster Stadium.
Tied 5-5 after six rounds of penalties, Rhinelander’s Eric Parish saved a shot by Medford’s Keagan Gehrke and had a chance to win it himself as the Hodags seventh shooter, but Medford keeper Eric Paul denied that chance. After a Lucas Mahner conversion, Paul denied Rhinelander freshman Henry Bonardelli to the near post to seal it.
Owen Evers, Dean Gillingham, Landon Catlin, Asher Rivord and Kamden Kostrova converted in penalties for Rhinelander.
The Hodags led 1-0 on an Aidan Lueder strike in the 18th minute, but Medford equalized the match on a goal by Nathan Schuld in the 47th minute. Parish kept the game tied in extra time, denying a shot by Hayden Spangler in the 94th minute. Paul denied a breakaway chance by Rhinelander’s Roan Childs in the 100th minute and Childs’ rebound chance sailed high.
Shots were 21-16 in favor of Rhinelander. The Hodags had an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Parish made six saves in the contest.
Rhinelander’s season ends with a 1-13-4 record.
Volleyball: Mauston 3, Rhinelander 1
The Rhinelander High School volleyball team captured a set but was not able to pull off an upset Tuesday night, falling at fifth-seeded Mauston 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-7 in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal match.
Ellie Cummings and Corynn Waksmonski had four kills each to lead Rhinelander, Kylie Treder had 11 assists, Kayla Skubal recorded 23 digs and three service aces while Waksmonski added a pair of blocks.
Rhinelander’s season ends with a 3-33 record.
