Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 126, Merrill 41
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team closed out Great Northern Conference dual meet play undefeated on Thursday. The Hodags won 10 of 11 events and beat Merrill 126-41 in the home finale at the Heck Family Community Pool.
Vivian Lamers and Ella Heck were both four-event winners for the Hodags. Lamers took the 200-yard individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and was on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Heck claimed the 50 and 100 freestyle and was on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Emma Houg took the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke as part of a three-win night for the senior. Lola Beach added a win in the 500 freestyle and, in all, the Hodags had nine different swimmers play a role in at least one victory.
With the win, the Hodags (8-0) sit in sole possession of first place in the GNC heading into next Friday’s conference meet, hosted by Ladysmith at the Rice Lake High School natatorium.
Boys’ soccer: Antigo 4, Rhinelander 1
The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team ended up on the wrong side of a second-half scoring barrage in a 4-1 loss to Antigo Thursday night in Antigo.
The teams combined for four goals in a roughly six-minute span. Antigo scored three of those goals, however — including a pair by Scott Hagerty — to take a 4-1 lead in the match. Asher Rivord scored the lone goal for the Hodags.
Shots were 10-8 in favor of the Robins in the match.
Rhinelander (1-13-3, 1-9-2-0 Great Northern ) will open the WIAA tournament at home against Medford this coming Tuesday.
