Rhinelander to host fair maps community hearing

The League of Women Voters of the Northwoods will host the Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition for a community hearing on an independent redistricting commission on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at ArtStart, 65 South Stevens Street in Rhinelander.

The hearing will give residents an opportunity to learn about proposed legislation to create an independent redistricting commission, which advocates hope to see enacted before the 2030 Census and redistricting process. The proposal seeks to ensure that legislative and congressional maps are drawn fairly, transparently, and without partisan influence.

These hearings are being held across the state to gather public input on the draft proposal. Community members are encouraged to attend, share their perspectives, and support fair representation for all Wisconsin voters.

“We may have fair maps now, but they’re only temporary,” said a spokesperson for the Fair Maps Coalition. “Without lasting reform, Wisconsin risks returning to a system where politicians pick their voters instead of voters picking their representatives.”

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin and the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods are co-sponsoring the Rhinelander event as part of their ongoing efforts to promote nonpartisan redistricting reform.
