Hodag Hustle mountain bike race

The Rhinelander Northwoods Composite mountain bike team hosted the Hodag Hustle race for the Wisconsin Interscholastic Cycling League Sunday, Oct. 5 at Tesomas Scout Camp in the town of Pine Lake. 

The Rhinelander High School partition of the team was 54th in Division 2 while the RNC partition, comprised of riders from districts surrounding Rhinelander, was 39th. 

Holden Schmitz and Michael Tredupp were the two riders on the high school side for RHS. Schmitz was 25th in the varsity boys’ race (1 hour, 19 minutes, 9.8 seconds) while Tredupp was 24th in the JV-2 boys’ race (42:13.9). 

Five competed on the high school side for RNC. Cody Price was 30th in the varsity boys’ race (1:21.26.9); William Gregersen was 18th in JV-3 (1:02:19.8); Conley Meyer (39:40.3) and Everett Smith (49:39.8) were 12th and 52nd, respectively, in JV-2; and Connor Zorn was 32nd in the freshman boys’ division (43:55.7).

In middle school action, RNC once again had four riders in the top 12 of the high-end MS2 boys’ class. Hans Sommer (34:50.6) was the runner up followed by Emmett Tuckey in eighth (37:04.6), Jacob MacFarland in 10th (37:25.6) and Liam McKissack in 12th (37:36.2).

Alexander Rusch was 14th (20:00.9) and Ricky Gensler took 59th (26:19.8) in the eighth-grade boys’ race; Evelyn MacFarland was third (23:06.5) and Cecily Sharpe was 28th (34:04.3) in the sixth-grade girls race; and JT Rudesill was 19th in the sixth-grade boys’ race (26:19.8). 

The series will conclude with the Red Barn State Championships in Waterloo Oct. 19.


Middle School swimmers take double dual over Antigo, Horace Mann

The James Williams Middle School girls’ swim team won a home double dual Tuesday, defeating Horace Mann (Wausau East) 123-84 and Antigo 145-51 at the Heck Family Community Pool. 

Charlotte LeClair and Stella Beach were both four-event winners for Rhinelander. LeClair won the 100-yard individual medley (1:12.40) and the 100 breaststroke (33.23) while Beach claimed the 50 freestyle (27.03) and the 100 backstroke (31.79). Both swimmers were on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, along with Natalie Then.

The three teamed with Reese Rossing to take the 200 medley (2:16.28) and with Addeleigh Toms to win the 400 freestyle (4:45.26). Rossing added a win for the Hodags in the 200 freestyle (2:30.58).


Middle School harriers fare well at Pines

The James Williams Middle School cross country team had a strong showing Tuesday at the Northland Pines Invite, winning the boys’ division while taking second in the girls’ race. 

The Hodag boys were led by a pair of sixth-graders. Liam Johnson took third on the day, covering the 2-mile course in 12 minutes, 18.8 seconds while Fielder Lueth was fourth (12:49.9). Eighth grader Tyson Fischer also made the podium, taking sixth (13:06.3). Dawson Ruetz was 12th for Rhinelander, Casey Waksmonski was 17th, Jack Congdon finished 25th and Jacob Baumann was 30th.

Avery Verbist was the lone JWMS medalist on the girls side, placing seventh (13:35.4). Quinn Stinebrink was 15th followed by Charlotte MacIntryre in 16th, Helen Beuning in 20th, Jade Chiamulera in 21st, Olivia Eades in 23rd and Marina Karowski in 27th.


JV football

The Rhinelander High School JV and JV2 football teams had success this past week against Mosinee. The JV2 squad defeated Mosinee 29-14 at Mike Webster Stadium Thursday, Oct. 2 while the JV team defeated Mosinee 22-16 Monday, Oct. 6.
