Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Merrill 1 (Rhinelander wins PKs 4-3)
The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team scored early and held on to a 1-1 draw Thursday night in Merrill. The Hodags took an additional point in Great Northern Conference play by winning its second penalty kick shootout of the year, taking it 4-3.
Freshman Henry Bonardelli scored on a cross in the ninth minute and it stood as the lone goal until the 67th when James Crockford tied it from the edge of the 18.
Owen Evers, Aidan Lueder, Dean Gillingham and Landon Catlin converted for the Hodags in penalties. Asher Rivord missed high on a chance to clinch the shootout to leadoff the fifth round, but Merrill’s Vincent Keenan missed high on his chance to send the shootout to extra kicks.
Merrill outshot Rhinelander 21-8 in the contest. Eric Parish made four saves in the draw.
Rhinelander (1-11-3, 1-7-2-0 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines on Tuesday.
Girls’ swim: Rhinelander 137, Mosinee 24
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team won all 11 events Thursday in a 137-24 win at Mosinee in GNC dual meet play.
Rylee Mickevicius and Vivian Lamers were four-event winners for the Hodags. Mickevicius won the 100-yard freestyle, the 100 backstroke and was on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. Lamers took the 200 freestyle, the 100 butterfly and was on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Emma Houg added wins in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle as part of a three-win night. Millie Gruett won the 50 freestyle and Kiley Pooch took the 100 breaststroke.
Rhinelander (7-0 Great Northern) will round out conference play next Thursday at home against Merrill.
