RHS sports recap: Wednesday, Oct. 8

Girls’ tennis: Rhinelander T7th/17, WIAA sectionals

The Rhinelander High School girls’ tennis team went 1-2 in its matches Wednesday at WIAA Division 1 sectionals in Eau Claire.

Freshman Lucy Evers took the runner-up spot at No. 4 singles, winning her first match against Superior’s Anna James in a match tiebreaker before dropping the championship match in straight sets. 

The No. 1 doubles pair of Teagan Turcotte and Maddie Legrey lost in straight sets to the No. 1 seed from the Eau Claire Memorial subsectional, Sophie McBride and Emily Halfen of Eau Claire Memorial (22-6) in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, denying the pair a chance to advance to the state meet.

Evers did not have an automatic path to state at No. 4 singles, even if she won the sectional.
