RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Oct. 7

Boys’ soccer: Rhinelander 1, Medford 0

The Rhinelander High School boys’ soccer team finally broke into the win column Tuesday night. 

Asher Rivord headed home a Henry Bonardelli corner kick in the ninth minute and its stood up as the Hodags defeated the Medford Raiders 1-0 at Mike Webster Stadium.

Stats were nearly identical in the match, with both teams attempting 15 shots. Rhinelander had a narrow 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Eric Parish stopped six saves in the shutout. 

Rhinelander (1-11-2, 1-7-1-0 Great Northern) travels to Merrill on Thursday.

Volleyball: Merrill 3, Rhinelander 0

The Rhinelander High School volleyball team was swept by Merrill 25-19, 25-16, 25-14 on Tuesday to round out GNC dual meet play at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 

Olivia Ruetz led Rhinelander with five kills on the night, Kylie Treder had seven assists while Kayla Skubal had 10 dugs and two service aces. 

Rhinelander (2-29, 0-8 Great Northern) is the No. 8 seed heading into Saturday’s Great Northern Conference tournament in Eagle River and will begin the event playing top-seeded Mosinee. 

Cross country: RHS boys 2nd/10, girls 3rd/6, Northland Pines Invite

The Rhinelander High School cross country team fared well on Tuesday, taking second in the boys’ division and third in the girls’ division of the Northland Pines Invite in Eagle River. 

Avrom Barr paced the Hodag boys, finishing second overall in the 5K race with a time of 16 minutes, 35.1 seconds. Jackson Weinzatl was seventh, Jonathan Campbell finished 11th, Grant Gremban was 15th and Michael Brunette was 18th. 

Macy Myers turned in a career-best time of 19:51.4 as she finished third for the Hodag girls. Kara Monk was fifth, followed by Gabby Wanta in 26th, Morgan Cahee in 34th and Adeline Olson in 39th. 

The Hodags return to action Saturday in Tomahawk.
