Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 83, Crandon 25
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team lead virtually wire-to-wire in its season opener, cruising past the Crandon Cardinals 83-25 Tuesday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags used a 30-4 run midway through the first half to seize control and took a 47-11 lead to halftime. Devon Feck was a perfect 8 for 8 from the field, scored a game-high 21 points and led four Hodags in double figures. Abe Gretzinger had 16 points, Jatyn Barkys had 12, Rowan Wiczek scored 10 and Evan Shoeder added eight points and 14 rebounds.
Rhinelander shot 61% from the field in the contest and had nine different players scored. Deegan Kircher led Crandon with eight points as the Cardinals were held to 22% shooting.
Rhinelander (1-0, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Ashland Monday, Dec. 1.
Boys’ hockey: Shawano/Bonduel 7, Rhinelander 2
The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team fell on the road at Shawano/Bonduel 7-2 Tuesday in its regular season opener at the Crawford Center.
The Hawks led 3-0 after one period, 5-1 after two periods and outshot the Hodags 27-17 in the contest. Finn Anunson and Logan Leonard recorded the goals for Rhinelander.
Rhinelander (0-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines Dec. 2.
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander at D.C. Everest Pentathlon
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team opened its season Tuesday in the D.C. Everest Pentathlon, an individual event where each swimmer competed in a 50-yard race in each of the four core strokes plus a 100-yard individual medley.
The Hodags had the top junior, sophomore and freshman swimmers in the meet. Dean Gillingham was the top sophomore, and second overall, with an aggregate time of 2 minutes, 45.17 seconds over the four events. Judson O’Malley was the top junior and finished third overall (2:47.99). Charlie Antonuk was the second-fastest junior and seventh overall (2:51.19) and Kellen O’Malley was tops among freshman and 14th overall (3:03.07).
The Hodags will open Great Northern Conference play at Shawano/Seymour Tuesday, Dec. 2.
