Girls’ swimming: Rhinelander 3rd/33, WIAA D2 state
The Rhinelander High School girls’ swim team scored seven podium finishes and took third at the WIAA Division 2 state meet Friday night in Waukesha. It marked the second straight third-place finish for the Hodags at the state meet.
Vivian Lamers was the runner-up for in the 100-yard freestyle (53.47 seconds) and swam to a fourth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.43). Ella Heck took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.65) and Millie Gruett was fifth in the 100 butterfly (59.63).
The Hodags scored top-four finishes in all three relays. Rhinelander was the runners-up in the 200 medley relay (1:49.09) with Kiley Pooch, Heck, Gruett and June Chiamulera. The Hodags were third in the 400 freestyle relay with Lamers, Chiamulera, Heck and Rylee Mickevicius (3:39.24). Pooch, Mickevicius, Gruett and Lamers were fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.14).
Mickevicius added a seventh-place swim in the 200 freestyle and was 12th in the 100 butterfly. Pooch took ninth in the 100 backstroke and tied for 12th in the 50 freestyle. Heck took 11th in the 100 freestyle. Emma Houg placed 13th in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
Whitefish Bay won eight events to claim its second straight state title with Madison Edgewood taking the runner-up spot. The Hodags finished 5 1/2 points ahead of Shorewood for third. It marked Rhinelander’s sixth consecutive top-four finish at the state meet.
