RHS Sports recap: Thursday, May 29
Baseball: Rhinelander 5, Amery 0
Conner Rappley struck out 12 over 6 2/3 innings and the Rhinelander Hodags turned in a two-hit shutout of the Amery Warriors Thursday in a WIAA Division 2 baseball regional quarterfinal contest at Stafford Field.
Rappley walked just two before reaching the pitch count limit one batter before a complete game. Dylan Vanderbunt worked around a two-out walk in the seventh to close out the contest.
Rhinelander scored a run in the first, added three in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Vanderbunt went 2-for-2 and scored a run while Abe Gretzinger, Tyler Chariton and Jackson Waydick all delivered RBI this in the fourth inning. Rhinelander outhit Amery 5-2 in the contest.
The Hodags (12-10, 7-5 Great Northern) clinched a winning record on the season and will travel to second-seeded St. Croix Falls next Tuesday for a regional semifinal contest.
Girls’ soccer: Lakeland 2, Rhinelander 0
The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team was forced to share the Great Northern Conference title after falling 2-0 to Lakeland Thursday night in the regular season finale at Mike Webster Stadium.
Cale Quade converted a penalty kick for Lakeland in the 45th minute and Bobbi Lee added an insurance goal in the 69th. Rhinelander lost the game despite outshooting Lakeland 21-6 in the contest.
Rylee Mickevicius made one save in defeat.
Rhinelander (12-5-0, 9-1-0-0 Great Northern) will open the WIAA playoffs next Thursday against either Antigo or Mosinee.
