RHS Sports recap: Monday, May 19

Baseball: Rhinelander 8, Lakeland 4

The Rhinelander High School baseball team led wire-to-wire Monday and defeated Lakeland 8-4 in Great Northern Conference play in Minocqua.

The Hodags used a three-run sixth inning to break open a one-run game as they scored their third consecutive victory. Seth Nofftz had an RBI double that inning and the Hodags added two insurance runs on passed balls.

Jackson Waydick went 4 1/3 innings for Rhinelander, allowing four runs on seven hits. Only one of those runs was earned as the Hodags committed four errors in the game, including a pair in a three-run fourth that got Lakeland back within 5-4. Dylan Vanderbunt inherited a two-on jam in the fifth and allowed just one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the save.

The Hodags busted out for 11 hits in the game — including two from Conner Rappley who hit a two-run shot in the opening inning for the team’s first home run of the season. Vanderbunt, Sawyer Bishop and Vince White also recorded two hits.

Rhinelander (9-9, 6-5 Great Northern) travels to Medford on Thursday.

Girls’ soccer: Rhinelander 4, Medford 0

The Rhinelander High School girls’ soccer team got goals from four different players Monday as they remained unbeaten in the GNC with a 4-0 victory on the road at Medford.

Sophie Miljevich and Jordan Manske scored for the Hodags, who led 2-0 at halftime. Lindsey Hoerchler and Ella Heck added goals in the second half. The Hodags controlled the game, outshooting the Raiders 18-2 with a 9-2 edge in shots on goal.

Rhinelander (10-4-0, 7-0-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Antigo Tuesday.

Golf: Rhinelander 5th/7, GNC Meet No. 7

The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 352 on Monday to take fifth in the Great Northern Conference finale at Black River Golf Course in Medford. The result dropped the Hodags into fifth place in the final conference standings.

None of the Hodags cracked the top 10 on the day. Grant Gremban and Hank Kowieski had the best rounds of the day, tying for 14th with rounds of 87. Sam Schoppe and Blake Petroff each shot 89s and Brody Kowieski shot 91.

Schoppe was the lone Hodags to earn all-conference honors. He finished in the top 10 in the final conference point standings to land on the conference’s second team.

The Hodags will close out the regular season Friday with a home invite at Northwood Golf Club.
