RHS Sports recap: Friday, May 16
Baseball: Rhinelander 4, Mosinee 3
The Rhinelander High School baseball team upset Great Northern Conference-leading Mosinee in stunning fashion Friday night, scoring two runs on after a throwing error with two out in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Indians 4-3 at Stafford Field.
John Turek and Jackson Waydick scored the tying and winning runs after Mosinee shortstop Treve Stoffel fired wide to first base on a two-out grounder by Seth Nofftz.
Mosinee rallied from down 2-0 after five innings to tie it with a pair of runs in the sixth and take the lead on a Carter Fandrey RBI double in the seventh.
Nofftz had the only RBI on the night for Rhinelander, a two-out single in the third at put the Hodags on the board. Abe Gretzinger tripled in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch.
Conner Rappley got the win for Rhinelander, allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts over seven innings. The Hodags won despite getting outhit by Mosinee 9-5.
Rhinelander (7-8, 5-5 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Monday.
Golf: Rhinelander 3rd/7, GNC Meet No. 6
The RHS golf team placed third in blustery conditions on Friday in the penultimate leg of the Great Northern Conference golf tournament at Eagle River Golf Course.
The Hodags shot 340 on the day. Blake Petroff was the only Hodag in the top 10, placing seventh with an 82. Sam Schoppe shot 85, Brody Kowieski shot 86, Grant Gremban carded an 87 and Hank Kowieski shot 89.
The final round of the conference tournament takes place Monday at Black River Golf Course in Medford.
