RHS Sports recap: Monday, May 12

Baseball: Wausau East 7, Rhinelander 2

Wausau East rallied for five runs in the final two innings to defeat Rhinelander 7-2 in a non-conference game Monday at Stafford Field.

Ketyon Laszewski broke up a 2-all tie with an RBI single in the sixth and then added a three-run home run for insurance in the seventh. After East scored single runs in the second and third, the Hodags tied it in the fourth on a two-run single with two out by Sawyer Bishop.

Bishop went five-plus innings in the loss for Rhinelander, giving up four runs, but only two earned on four hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.

Rhinelander (6-9, 3-5 Great Northern) heads to Antigo on Tuesday.

Softball: Tomahawk 8, Rhinelander 5, 8 innings

The Rhinelander High School softball team rallied to force extra innings, but fell there, Tuesday, dropping an 8-5 decision to Tomahawk in eight innings at Andrea Musson Field.

Down 5-2 in the sixth, the Hodags tied it as Cassidy Lindner drew a bases loaded walk and Sadie Edyvean scored two as she reached on an error to tie it.

After the Hodags wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, they couldn’t thwart out a two-out rally in the eighth. Anita Ziert doubled and scored on an RBI single by Sophie Olsen. Averi Petta then hit an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first, the Hdoags got back within 3-2 on a Saige Mutter solo home run in the second and an RBI fielder’s choice by Chase Verbist in the fourth.

Kendall Vanney took the loss for Rhinelander, allowing eight runs on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts over eight innings. Aleece Johnson collected two hits for the Hodags.

Rhinelander (5-14, 2-9 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee Thursday.

Golf: Rhinelander 4th/7, GNC Meet No. 4

The Rhinelander High School golf team posted a score of 328 and took fourth in the fourth leg of the GNC golf tournament at Rhinelander Country Club.
