RHS Sports recap: Saturday, May 10
Softball: Rhinelander 0-2, Shawano Invite
The Rhinelander High School softball team dropped both of its game Saturday in the Shawano Invite, falling to Waupaca 7-2 and Shawano 17-0.
The Comets took the lead 3-1 in the third inning and, after the Hodags trimmed the gap to 4-2 in the sixth, scored three more insurance runs. The Hodags were outhit 10-4 in the loss with Kendall Vanney and Claire Yunkers scoring the runs. Vanney allowed seven runs on 10 hits with two walks and a strikeout over six innings in the loss.
Shawano scored 14 times in the first inning and three more times in the second inning of Game 2. The Hodags were no-hit in the second game. Sadie Edyvean drew a one-out walk in the third and was the only Rhinelander player to reach base. Vanney gave up nine ring on 10 hits over 2 2/3 innings while Nevaeh Anderson was tagged for eight runs on seven hits in one third of an inning.
Rhinelander (5-13, 2-8 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk on Monday.
Golf: Rhinelander at Merrill Invite
The Rhinelander High School golf team competed in the Merrill Best Ball Invite on Saturday, forming a pair of two-man teams for the event.
The Hodags’ second team of freshman Grant Gremban and sophomore Chase West finished tied for 10th on the day and shot 1-over 73 as a team, taking the lower score between the two on a given hole. The Hodags first team of seniors Sam Schoppe and Brody Kowieski shot 74 to tie for 12th.
The Hodags are back in action Monday as they host the fourth leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament at Rhinelander Country Club.
