RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, May 6
Baseball: Rhinelander 3, Antigo 1
The Rhinelander High School baseball team kept Antigo off the board until the seventh inning as it snapped a five-game losing skid with a 3-1 victory over the Robins Tuesday at Stafford Field.
The Hodags scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings and that was enough run support for Jackson Waydick, who struck out eight batters over six scoreless innings to earn the win. Conner Rappley worked around a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save.
Dylan Vanderbunt drove in two runs for the Hodags, Abe Gretzinger added an RBI and Sawyer Bishop collected two hits at the plate. Rhinelander edged Antigo in the hit column, 7-6.
The Hodags (6-7, 3-4 Great Northern) travel to Eagle River Friday to take on Northland Pines.
Softball: Antigo 7-16, Rhinelander 0-2
The Rhinelander High School softball team lost a doubleheader at Antigo 7-0 and 16-2 on Tuesday.
Antigo’s Bethany Lewis faced one batter over the minimum in Game 1. Lucy Lindner’s one-out single in the fourth broke up Lewis’s no-hit and perfect game bids. Aleece Johnson was tagged for four runs on four hits in just one-third of an inning in the loss for Rhinelander. Kendall Vanney went the rest of the way, allowing three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Hodags got single runs in the second and third innings of Game 2, but couldn’t overcome a six-run first inning for the Robins and a five-run fourth inning. Kalyn Miller had the Hodags’ only hit of Game 2. Chase Verbist recorded an RBI groundout in the second inning and Vanney scored on a wild pitch in the third. Vanney took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits over an inning-plus of work.
