RHS Sports recap: Monday, May 5

Baseball: D.C. Everest 7, Rhinelander 6


The Rhinelander High School baseball team rallied in the seventh inning, only to lose on a walkout 7-6 Monday at D.C. Everest in non-conference play.


Trailing 6-2 going into the seventh, the Hodags tied the game on an RBI double by Dylan Vanderbunt, a two-run single by Rowan Wiczek and an RBI single by Sawyer Bishop.


The Evergreens loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and eventually walked it off as a 1-2 pitch by Vince White went to the backstop, allowing the winning run to score. The pitch was charged as a passed ball, according to the Hodags’ scorebook.


Jackson Waydick tripled and scored for the Hodags in the fourth inning. The Hodags loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but the only run they produced was Tyler Chariton scoring on a wild pitch.


White took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and a four strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Dylan Vanderbunt allowed four runs over the first 3 1/3 innings on three hits with six walks and a strikeout.


Rhinelander (5-7, 2-4 Great Northern) hosts Antigo Tuesday.


Softball: Rhinelander 6, Crandon 4


The RHS softball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Crandon 6-4 Monday on the road in non-conference play. The Hodags scored twice in the top of the seventh to take their first lead of the game.


Freshman Kalyn Miller drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to center and Saige Mutter added an RBI single to give the Hodags a 6-4 lead. 


Rhinelander scored four times with two out in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Kadyn Taylor hit a two-run single to start the rally to score Ava Rathbun and Lucy Lindner, who had both walked earlier in the inning. An error in left on a ball hit by Kendall Vanney allowed Taylor to score all the way from first. Vanney got to second on the play and scored on a game-tying RBI single by Miller. 


Aleece Johnson got the win for Rhinelander, giving up four runs on five hits with a pair of walks and 12 strikeouts over seven innings. 


Rhinelander (3-9, 0-6 Great Northern) plays a doubleheader at Antigo Tuesday.
