Gail Raymond Winnie, 89 of Harshaw, passed away on Monday, March 17 at Rennes Health and Rehab in Rhinelander. Gail was the son of Raymond and Leona (Pinkowsky) Winnie and brother to Arvilla (Richard) Bender, Duane (Mary) Winnie and Judith (Vincent) Richards.
Gails faith was strong in the Lord, he was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Minocqua and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Wausau and a long time member of Faith Lutheran Church in Harshaw where he was a very active member.
Gail graduated in 1955 from Wausau Senior High, attended the University of Wisconsin Marathon Campus and then joined the Wisconsin National Guard Reserves with Company D for ten years; his rank was SFC-First Class.
He was an accountant most of his life. Was employed at Bill Krause CPA, Wausau School District, ING Foods, Journey into the Wild (of which he was co-owner and founder) and supervisor for the town of Cassian.
Gail had a love for hunting. He went on many hunting trips throughout North America and Africa. Gail owned and operated the Bearskin Wildlife Reserve in Harshaw. He loved to talk to people and enjoyed being involved in his community. His interests include exploring the history of Harshaw/Cassian, visiting historical places and museums, supporting his Green Bay Packers as a season ticket holder and being a part of the Veterans Cemetery Group in Harshaw.
Gail had a strong bond and love for his family. He cherished his nephews, nieces, their spouses and their children. He treasured the friendships of people in his community and his co-workers.
Gail was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Leona, sister and brother-in-law Judith and Vincent Richards, sister-in-law Mary Winnie, niece Suzette Winnie and nephew Rex Winnie.
Gails family would like to thank all his caregivers, EMTs, ambulance personnel, staff at Aspirus Hospitals in Tomahawk and Rhinelander; doctors, nurses and staff at Marshfield Hospital and clinic and most recently Rennes in Rhinelander. A special thanks for their caregiving to Nikki and his cousin Penny Ravey (whom he called a special angel). God bless and rest in peace Gail.
Visitation for Gail will be held on Saturday, March 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Harshaw, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. followed by military honors and luncheon to follow. Burial will take place at Restlawn Memorial Park in Wausau, on Monday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Union Grove Cemetery Veterans Memorial Committee.
