Boys’ basketball: New Richmond 62, Rhinelander 55
The Hodag offense ran cold late as the season came to an end Monday night for the Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team in a 62-55 loss to the New Richmond Tigers in the WIAA Division 2 regional finals at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags rallied from down 55-47 with 8:07 remaining to tie it at 55 and a Seth Nofftz layup with 3:50 to play, but Rhinelander went scoreless from there and New Richmond went ahead for good on a basket by Jack Charbonneau with 2:08 remaining. The Tigers were eventually able to put it away bu making five of their last six free throws.
Charbonneau scored a game-high 27 for the Tigers and added six rebounds. New Richmond raced out to an early 15-5 lead before Rhinelander allured to take a 21-18 lead and eventually a 34-31 advantage to halftime. Connor Rallied added eight for the Tigers including a bucket that made it 38-36 with 14:30 to play. Though Rhinelander tied it on four separate occasions, it never retook the lead after that point.
Devon Feck led Rhinelander with 14 points, Truman Lamers had 13 and Abe Gretzinger had 10. The Hodags lost despite shooting nearly 55% from the field (23 of 42). The Tigers shot 58% (25 of 43) and Charbonneau finished 12 of 14 from the floor.
Rhinelander finishes the year 19-6. New Richmond will face Wausau East in the sectional semifinals in Eau Claire Thursday.
