Rhinelander Prep bashes Lakeland-2

Rhinelander had plenty of pop in its bats Wednesday night, and got a bit of help from the opposition, as it routed Lakeland-2 18-3 in three innings during a Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League game at Stafford Field.

The Hodags batted around in the first inning, and nearly got through the order a second time, as they put up 13 runs in the opening frame. Rhinelander added five more runs in the second — capped off by a three-run inside the park home run by Jaxon West with two out in the inning.

It was part of a five-RBI night for West, who plated the Hodags’ first two-runs on a single in the first inning.

Jaxson Kremer went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored in the contest. Ben Gehrmann and West both had two hits and scored three times. Micah Sieker had a pair of RBIs in the contest. Finn Brown added an RBI double in the first inning and Brayden Herrmann had an RBI single in the second.

The Hodags had 10 hits in the contest and benefitted from five Lakeland walks, a hit batter and three errors.

Emmitt Webster allowed three runs over two innings to earn the victory. Brown worked a scoreless third inning for Rhinelander.

The Hodags sat 2-1 on the young season prior to a game at Eagle River on Monday that concluded after dealing. Rhinelander travels to Phillips on Wednesday and will be back home June 24 to face Lakeland-1.

Hoyt Dantoin struck out seven over four innings and all 11 players in Rhinelander’s lineup scored a run as the Hodags defeated Eagle River 14-2 in Senior League play Thursday night at Stafford Field.

After spotting Eagle River a run in the top of the first, it was all Rhinelander. The Hodags scored six times in the bottom half of the inning, added two more runs in the second and four in the third to seize control of the contest.

Dantoin singled up the middle and scored Rhinelander’s opening run on a wild pitch with two out in the inning before Douglas Hartmann added an RBI single that plated Trevor Denton. After Daniel Meier reached on an error to extend the inning, Tanner Augustine had a two-run single up the middle and scored on a wild pitch. Aden Flannery added an infield hit for an RBI as the Hodags took a 6-1 lead after an inning.

Rhinelander took advantage of Eagle River miscues to add to the lead in the second. Henry Schmitz walked and Johnny Baker reached on an error. Both scored after Hartmann reached on a two-out error.

Following three straight walks in the third, Parker McCone and Schmitz hit back-to-back two-run doubles to put Rhinelander ahead 12-1. Eagle River got a run back in the fourth but the Hodags answered with two more in the bottom of the inning. Hartmann singled and scored on Brodee Dillenberg’s infield hit and Dylan Webster came around after Flannery reached on an error.

Dantoin hummed through four innings for Rhinelander on the mound. The lefty allowed just two hits and no walks as he allowed two runs. Augustine struck out the side in the fifth for Rhinelander to close out the game via the run rule.

Hartmann led the Hodags at the plate with two hits while Schmitz, Augustine and McCone drove in two runs each. Webster drew three walks in the game and scored in all three of his plate appearances.

Rhinelander is back in action Tuesday night at Tomahawk and will return home Thursday to face Phillips.
