The Rhinelander Basketball Association hosted a fifth- and sixth-grade girls’ basketball tournament at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium Saturday, Jan. 25. The Hodag fifth graders won their pool, going 3-0 on the day. The Hodags defeated Wausau Newman (41-7), Phillips (28-8) and Wausau East (20-6). The sixth-grade girls finished second, defeating Prentice (26-18) and Wausau East (46-11) before falling to Wittenberg-Birnamwood (48-63).

RBA 7th grade boys win tourney
The Rhinelander Basketball Association’s seventh grade boys’ basketball team took first place in Merrill Saturday, Jan. 25. Middle school wrestling
The James Williams Middle School wrestling team hosted an eight-team Central Wisconsin Wrestling Conference meet at the JWMS gymnasium Monday, Jan. 27.

Youth bowlers compete in tourneys
A handful of Rhinelander area youth bowlers participated in a pair of tournaments last weekend.
Twenty-eight youth from Rhinelander and Eagle River’s Junior Leagues in the Northwoods USBC held its annual youth tournament, this year at Nick’s Hodag Lanes in Rhinelander.
Addison Habeck won the girls’ division and $125 in prize money with a 698-pin handicap series (476 scratch). She beat out Hodag teammate Katrina roof for the top spot by 55 pins. Roof took home $75 for her runner-up finish (643 handicap/382 scratch). Johanna Dellenbach had the highest scratch score of the group (491), but her 602 handicap score put her sixth.
On the boys’ side, Alex Hall (639 handicap/561 scratch) was the Hodags’ top finisher in seventh.
The top six boys spots were paid out and the top four girls spots were paid out.
Later on Sunday four pairs of Rhinelander youth bowlers traveled to Antigo to bowl in the Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin Youth/Adult State Qualifier event at North Star Lanes.
Addison Habeck and her dad Jerod Habeck qualified for the state tournament along with Dominic Hakala and his mom Becky Hakala. Addison rolled games of 124, 168, 224 and 98, while Jerod had games of 159, 178, 193 and 210. Dom rolled games of 276, 148, 201 and 233, while Becky tossed games of 176, 166, 188 and 132.
Also participating were Alyssa Habeck with her mom, Jessica Habeck and Oren Alsager with his adult bowler, Lonnie Bamberg. The state tournament will be held the first two weekends of April at Les & Jim’s Lincoln Lanes in Merrill.
