RHS Sports recap: Friday, Jan. 31

Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 56, Northland Pines 38

The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team overcame a slow start to take care of the Northland Pines Eagles 56-38 Friday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.

Down 20-9 with 7:54 left in the first half, the Hodags closed on a 15-3 run to take a one-point lead to the break, and then opened the second half on a 20-7 run to seize control of the contest.

Evan Shoeder had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead a balanced Rhinelander attack. Devon Feck also had 13 points while Jatyn Barkus had 12 points and Truman Lamers added 10. Milo Albrecht led Northland Pines with 13 points.

Rhinelander’s win, coupled with Medford’s 62-59 loss at Mosinee moved the Hodags back into a first-place tie with the Raiders in the GNC standings, with Mosinee just a half game back. Rhinelander (10-4, 6-2 Great Northern) travels to Wausau West on Tuesday.

Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 40, Northland Pines 34

The RHS girls’ basketball team overcame a scare on the road and fended off Northland Pines 40-34 Friday night.

Pines took the lead twice in the second half, but the Hodags held the Eagles to one field goal over the final seven-plus minutes and finished the game on an 11-4 run.

Dawsyn Barkus and Vivian Lamers each had 10 points to lead the Hodags while Lexi Beran chipped in eight. Kaydence Brost had 14 to lead Northland Pines.

The Hodags (11-7, 6-3 Great Northern) host Stevens Point on Tuesday.

Boys’ hockey: Mosinee 5, Rhinelander 0

The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team could not overcome a slow start and fell to Mosinee on the road 5-0 Friday night to round out GNC regular season play.

The Indians scored three times in the first 3:23 of the contest and tacked on more in the first period as the lead 4-0 after a period. Mosinee scored once more in the second period.

Rhinelander was outshot 46-17 in the contest. Asher Rivord made 41 saves in defeat.

Rhinelander (2-16-0, 0-7-0-0 Great Northern) will travel to top-seeded Tomahawk to begin the Great Northern Conference tournament on Tuesday.
