Girls’ hockey: Pines blanked by Wisconsin Valley Union
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op was shut out Thursday night by Wisconsin Valley Union, falling 6-0 in a battle of the Eagles at the Eagle River Sports Arena.
Valley Union, a co-op of schools in the Marshfield, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids and Waupaca areas, scored twice in the first period, once in the second and three times in the third as it outshot Northland Pines 47-11 in the contest.
Northland Pines freshman Lucy Nowak started in goal and made 27 saves through two-plus period. Junior Jalyn Zadnik, one of six Rhinelander skaters in the co-op, played the final 10 plus minutes and tallied 14 saves.
The Eagles (3-14-0) where scheduled to host Houghton-Hancock, Mich. Monday in Eagle River in a game that concluded after press time for today’s edition. Pines travels to Black River Falls on Friday before holding its one and only home game in Rhinelander this season Monday, Feb. 3 against Fox Cities.
