RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Jan. 25

Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 2nd/17, Small School State Invite

The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team claimed eight top-three finishes and was the runner-up Saturday in the Small School State Invite at Shorewood High School. The Hodags finished only eight points behind defending WIAA D2 state champion McFarland in a meet that featured most of the top D2 programs in the state. 

Rhinelander went 1-2 with seniors Mathias Fugle and Samson Shinners in the 100-yard freestyle. Fugle added a third-place swim in the 50 freestyle while Shawn Denis and Dean Gillingham went second and third in the 100 breaststroke. 

The Hodags took second in all three relays. Dolan O’Malley, Denis, Charlie Antounk and Judson O’Malley swam the 200 medley relay; Denis, Judson O’Malley, Shinners and Fugle swam the 200 freestyle relay; Shinners  Dolan O’Malley, Gillingham and Fugle swam the 400 freestyle relay.

Rhinelander is back in action Tuesday night in a GNC dual meet at Antigo.

Wrestling: Rhinelander 16th/20, Wausau East Invite

The RHS wrestling team took 16th in the 20-team Wausau East Invite on Saturday. 

Seniors Logan Schwinger and Reid Schultz scored the Hodags’ top finishes on the day, placing third in the 190- and 285-pound brackets, respectively. 

The Hodags are back in action this coming Thursday in a non-conference triangular in Three Lakes.
