Come fall, two School District of Rhinelander elementary schools will have new leadership. Following a closed session Monday evening, the district’s board of education approved the retirement of Paul Johnson and Gayle Daniel effective at the end of this school year.

Johnson currently serves as principal at Central Elementary while Daniel is principal at Northwoods Community Elementary School (NCES) in Cassian.

District superintendent Eric Burke noted the two have devoted a combined 67 years to education and impacted countless students along the way.

“They will both be deeply missed and we wish them the best in their next steps,” he said.

Burke said he expects there will be internal and external candidates for the positions, both of which have been posted.

“We plan to interview and fill the positions prior to spring break,” he added.

Information on the positions is available on the school district’s Facebook page.

An email sent to all staff members announcing the retirements included information about the two principals long careers in education. “Throughout her career, Gayle led with her heart, embodying the true spirit of an educator — selfless, determined, and always ready to go above and beyond for the people she served,” according to the email. “Gayle’s time in Rhinelander was marked by memorable moments that showcased her humor, resilience, and dedication. Ask her about funny memories, and she’ll laugh, recalling how she was once slimed at Crescent Elementary after students surpassed a penny drive goal. ‘There was slime everywhere,’ she said, chuckling. ‘I even found some in my ears the next day!’ Then there was the unforgettable day she braved the NCES student body wearing goggles, a football helmet, knee pads, and wielding a metal garbage can lid and broom as water balloons rained down. All this because the students had raised over $1,000 for the Kids Heart Challenge. ‘The things principals agree to do for their students make the best memories,’ Gayle said, smiling. Gayle’s retirement marks the end of an era, but her influence will endure in the lives she’s touched, the memories she’s created, and the community she’s helped shape. As her time in education concludes, one thing is certain: Gayle Daniel leaves her post with a full heart, and a career full of memories to treasure forever.”

Johnson, a Rhinelander High School alum, spent 23 years in district administration.

According to the email, he will leave behind a legacy of “patience, knowledge and unwavering passion.”

“Over the years, his calm demeanor, thoughtful leadership, and love for the district made him a respected and beloved figure among students, staff, and families alike,” the email reads. “While the School District of Rhinelander bids farewell to Paul’s leadership, his impact will continue to resonate in the lives of those he inspired. With gratitude for his service and best wishes for the adventures ahead, we celebrate Paul Johnson’s remarkable career and the legacy of dedication he leaves behind.”
