Bitter cold ices tonight’s Hodag sports slate
All of tonight’s scheduled Rhinelander High School sports contest have been canceled or postponed due to cold weather.
The School District of Rhinelander canceled classes and all after school activities for today due to the bitter cold in an announcement Sunday morning. Varsity games impacted include boys’ basketball vs. Merrill, boys’ hockey at Mosinee and gymnastics at Antigo. Make-up dates for the contests had not been announced as of press time for today’s edition.
Much of the Northwoods is under either a Cold Weather Advisory or an Extreme Cold Warning with wind chill values of between minus-25 and minus-40 forecasted through the remainder of today.
Hockey: Pines co-op shutout in roadtrip
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey team was blanked by matching 5-0 scores Friday and Saturday during a two-game road trip, falling to the Cap City Cougars Friday night in Sun Prairie and the Badger Lightning Saturday afternoon in Baraboo.
The losses dropped the co-op, which includes six skaters from Rhinelander to 3-13-0 on the season.
On Saturday the Eagles gave up a goal in the first period, three in the second and one more in the third as they were outshot 40-16 in the contest. Rhinelander junior Jalyn Zadnik started in goal and made 35 saves in the loss.
A full box score from Friday’s game was unavailable as of press time for today’s edition.
The Eagles were scheduled to host Wisconsin Valley Union tonight, but that game was postponed due to extreme cold. Pines will take on Houghton-Hancock, Mich. Monday, Jan. 27 in Eagle River.
