RHS Sports recap: Thursday, Jan. 16


Boys’ hockey: Medford 5, Rhinelander 1


Four second-period goals were too many for the Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team to overcome as they fell to the Medford Raiders 5-1 Thursday at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.


Drake Nelson scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the second period, cutting the lead to 3-1 at the time, but the Raiders tacked on one more before the end of the period and another on a power play in the third period. 


Shots were 33-27 in favor of the Hodags. Asher Rivord made 22 saves in defeat. 


Rhinelander (2-12-0, 0-4-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Mosinee this coming Tuesday.


Boys’ swim: Rhinelander 131, Antigo 35; Rhinelander 137, Lakeland 22


The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team cruised in its double dual Thursday in Minocqua, defeating Lakeland 137-22 and Antigo 131-35. Rhinelander won all 11 events in the meet and 11 different swimmers played a role in at least one victory.


Samson Shinners won all four of his events, taking the 50-yard freestyle, the 100 breaststroke and swimming on two of Rhinelander’s winning relays. Dean Gillingham took the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle; Judson O’Malley claimed the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke; Shawn Denis won the 100 butterfly and Dolan O’Malley took the 500 freestyle. 


Rhinelander travels to Appleton Friday for an invite.


Wrestling: Rhinelander 42, Mosinee 30; Tomahawk 53, Rhinelander 30


The Rhinelander High School wrestling team split its matches Thursday in a GNC quadrangular meet in Mosinee. The Hdoags beat the hosts 42-30 and lost to Tomahawk 53-20.


Rhinelander took advantage of seven Mosinee forfeits in the first match. Ivan Loka and Logan Schwinger recorded pins for Rhinelander while Avrom Barr, Anthony Boldt, Gage Anderson, Jeffrey Dupree and Reid Schultz received forfeits. 


Loka, Boldt, Dresden Klaver, Schwinger and Schultz earned pins for Rhinelander against a Hatchet squad that was able to fill all 14 weights. 


Rhinelander (3-1, 1-1 Great Northern) will face Lakeland and Medford in a GNC quad at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium next Thursday.
