RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Jan. 14
Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 63, Mosinee 54
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team fended off a rally at Mosinee night Tuesday night and remained undefeated in GNC play with a 63-54 win over the Indians.
Rhinelander led 28-20 at halftime and had a double-digit lead early in the second half, but Mosinee cut the lead to two with under five minutes to play before the Hodags made a series of stops and hit free throws down the stretch to reestablish control.
Jatyn Barkus scored 15 points in the game, and went 10 of 11 from the foul line, to lead Rhinelander. Devon Feck added 13 points and Evan Shoeder had 10.
Rhinelander (9-2, 5-0 Great Northern) will battle Medford, which sits a game back in the GNC standings, Friday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Girls’ basketball: Mosinee 65, Rhinelander 24
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team, minus its leading scorer, was unable to keep up with Mosinee Tuesday night, falling to the Indians 65-24 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Sophomore Aubryn Clark suited but did not play in the contest after tweaking her back earlier in the week at practice. Without her, the Hodags committed 20 turnovers in the first half and trailed 35-10 at the break.
Dawsyn Barkus and Kelsey Winter each scored six points to lead Rhinelander. Taelyn Jirschele led Mosinee with 18 points.
Rhinelander (9-5, 4-2 Great Northern) travels to Medford on Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Northland Pines 11, Rhinelander 2
The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team fell on the road 11-2 to Northland Pines on Tuesday night.
The Eagles led 2-0 after a pair of late first-period goals. They scored four more times in the second and five in the third.
Dylan Shefveland and Kadin Rodziczak scored in the contest for Rhinelander. Shot totals were not available as of the time of this post.
Rhinelander (2-11-0, 0-3-0-0 Great Northern) hosts Medford Thursday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
Alpine skiing: RHS/NPHS boys 2nd/4, girls’ 2nd/4, NC Meet No. 2 (From Monday)
Both the Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine boys’ and girls’ ski teams took second on Monday during the second round of the Northern Conference season at Granite Peak in Wausau.
Ben Olson placed in the top five in all three runs to finish second overall and lead the Hodag boys. Jason Linn came home ninth, Holden Schmitz was 12th, Eli Repenshek was 16th, Wyler Koput took 21st, Henry Schmitz was 26th and Robert Guolee finished 30th.
Callie Hoerchler led the Hodag girls in 10th overall. Lyndsey Hoerchler was 12th, Jessica Linn finished 13th, Eliana Conrad was 14th, Karlie Yunkers took 15th, Alia Bergman was 19th and Lucy Eddy finished 24th.
The conference did not stage snowboard races on Monday. Both the Hodag skiers and boarders will compete in round 3 of the conference season Jan. 24 at Snowriver Mountain Resort in Wakefield, Mich.
