Pines co-op drops pair of games
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op suffered a pair of tough losses over the weekend, falling to the Stoughton co-op Icebergs 2-1 in overtime Friday and to the Eau Claire Area Stars 5-0 Saturday at the Eagle River Sports Arena.
Friday’s game was scoreless until late in the third period. Ava Carillo, a junior from Northland Pines, put the Eagles ahead on a power play goal with 5:17 left in regulation. Rhinelander sophomore Reese Retallick and Northland Pines sophomore Avery Renkes assisted on the play. Retallick is one of six players on the co-op from Rhinelander.
The Icebergs answered back with 3:52 to play in regulation as Kaydence Henke scored the tying goal. Hazel Rothering won it for Stoughton on a goal 2:58 into the extra session — the first shot by either team in overtime.
Shots were 39-25 in favor of the Icebergs. Northland Pines freshman Lucy Nowak stopped 37 shots in defeat.
On Saturday, the Stars scored twice in each of the first two periods and once in the third to blank the Eagles. Further details were not available as of press time.
The losses dropped the Eagles to 3-10-0 on the season. The Eagles will head to Medford tonight to face the Raiders. Two of the Eagles’ three wins on the season have come against Medford.
