RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Jan. 11


Boys’ hockey: Rhinelander 5, Medford 3


The RHS boys’ hockey team snapped a nine-game losing streak Saturday, defeating Medford 5-3 for third place in the Charlie Phelps Memorial Tournament in Merrill.


Dylan Shefveland scored twice in the first period as the Hodags led 2-1. Rhinelander led 3-2 after two periods thanks to a Drake Nelson goal and Logan Leonard scored twice in the third period to help put the victory away. 


Rhinelander outshot Medford 38-22 in the contest. Asher Rivord made 19 saves in the win. 


The Hodags (2-10-0, 0-2-0-0 Great Northern) travel to Northland Pines on Tuesday.


Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 2nd/15, Ashwaubenon Invite


The RHS boys’ swim team won three events and was the highest placing Division 2 team in the field Saturday as it took second place in the Jaguar Invite in Ashwaubenon.


Shawn Denis and Mathias Fugle went 1-2 for the Hodags in the 50-yard freestyle while Fugle took the 100 freestyle. Both were on Rhinelander’s winning 200 freestyle relay team with Samson Shinners and Judson O’Malley. 


Shinners added a runner-ip finish in the 200 freestyle while Dolan O’Malley was second in the 100 backstroke. Rhinelander took third in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.


The Hodags are back in action Thursday when they take on Lakeland and Antigo in a GNC double dual in Minocqua.


Wrestling: RHS girls 5th/23 at Merrill, RHS boys 11th/18 at Valders


All three RHS girls’ wrestlers placed in the top four of their respective weight classes Saturday as the team place fifth out of 23 squads at the Bluejay Challenge in Merrill. 


Cassidy Lindner went 4-1 on the day and was the runner-up at 120 pounds, Mya Swanson was 3-1 at 126 and took third there. Miranda Daab went 2-2 at 235, finishing fourth. 


Meanwhile, in Valders, the Hodag boys sent nine wrestlers and finished 11th in an 18-team field. Logan Schwinger won all five of his matches via the pin as he cruised to the championship at 190 pounds. 


The Hodags are back in action Thursday as the take on Mosinee and Tomahawk in a GNC quad in Tomahawk.
