RHS Sports recap: Friday, Jan. 10


Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 70, Lakeland 30


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team emphatically snapped a two-game losing streak Friday night, leading nearly wire-to-wire in a 70-30 victory over the Lakeland Thunderbirds at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. 


The Hodags opened the first half on a 9-2 run and ended it on an 18-2 run to lead 35-14 at the break. A 10-3 run to start the second half effectively put the game out of reach. 


Jatyn Barkus scored a career-high 14 points to pace the Hodags while Seth Nofftz and Truman Lamers had 12 points each. Jackson Burnett had 14 for Lakeland which was unofficially held to 20% (10 of 50) from the field. 


Rhinelander (8-2, 4-0 Great Northern) travels to Mosinee on Tuesday.


Girls’ basketball: Lakeland 62, Rhinelander 28


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team was no match for Lakeland Friday night in a battle of GNC unbeatens, falling to the T-Birds 62-28 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


Lakeland started the game on a 26-4 run. Rhinelander trimmed the lead down to 29-15 at the break, but Lakeland scored the first 10 points of the second half to put the game away.


Vivian Lamers led Rhinelander with nine points while Aubryn Clark was held to a season-low seven points in the contest. Kristina Ouimette led Lakeland with 27 points. 


Rhinelander (9-4, 4-1 Great Northern) hosts Mosinee on Tuesday.


Boys’ hockey: South-Central 5, Rhinelander 1 


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team lost to the South Central (DeForest) co-op 5-1 Friday night in the first round of the East/Merrill tournament in Merrill. 


The Navigators scores once in the first period and twice each in the second and third. Rhinelander’s Karter Massey scored an unassisted goal late in the first period, snapping a scoring drought for Rhinelander that spanned 13 periods.


South Central outshot Rhinelander 32-11. Asher Rivord made 27 saves in the loss.


Rhinelander (1-10-0, 0-2-0-0 Great Northern) will play Medford for third place in the tournament Saturday morning in Merrill.
