Northland Pines co-op shut out by No. 3 Central Wisconsin

The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op was blanked Tuesday night by the Central Wisconsin Storm 8-0 at Marathon Park in Wausau.

The Storm, ranked No. 3 in the latest Wisconsin Prep Hockey girls’ poll, scored twice in the first period, five times in the second period and once more in the third period. Individuals statistics from the game were unavailable as of press time.

The loss dropped the Eagles to 3-8-0. The co-op features skaters from six different schools, including six from Rhinelander.

The Eagles play back-to-back home games this weekend, facing the Stoughton co-op Icebergs this evening and the Eau Claire Area Stars tomorrow afternoon at the Eagle River Sports Arena.

Three Hodag skiers compete in Marquette

Three members of the Hodag Nordic ski club competed in the Lumi Hauskaa ski races hosted by the Superiorland Ski Club Jan. 4 and 5 in Marquette, Mich. Sisters Kayla, Kali and Kelsie Skubal all took part in the two-day event.

Kayla Skubal finished 19th in a 27-skier field in Saturday’s 5-kilometer skate race, covering the course in 20 minutes, 21.9 seconds. Kali Skubal was 25th (22:58.0). Kelsie Skubal took place in the 2.5-kilometer middle school race, finishing eighth out of 24 skiers (8:46.2).

In Sunday’s sprint races, Kayla Skubal and Kali Skubal were 19th and 20th, respectively, in the final standings after getting knocked out in the quarterfinal round of the bracket-style event. Kelsie Skubal was seventh in the middle school girls’ division, after taking third in her semifinal.

The Hodags will compete again Saturday and Sunday in the Seeley Hills Classic held at the American Birkebeiner Trailhead in Cable. That event was a late addition to the schedule after a lack of snow prompted the cancellation of three scheduled meets for the team.
