RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Jan. 7


Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 64, Three Lakes 37


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team pulled away late in the first half and into the second as it defeated Three Lakes 64-37 on the road Tuesday. 


The Hodags scored 15 straight points over a five-minute stretch late in the first half to build an 18-point lead before taking a 25-11 advantage to the bream. The Hodags then opened the second half on a 15-2 run to put the game effectively out of reach.


Aubryn Clark scored 26 points for Rhinelander while Vivian Lamers had 20 for the Hodags. Libby Eppler had 10 points to lead Three Lakes. 


Rhinelander (9-3, 4-0 Great Northern) will host conference-leading Lakeland on Friday night.


Boys’ hockey: D.C. Everest 4, Rhinelander 0


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team lost to D.C. Everest 4-0 on the road Tuesday night in Schofield. 


The Hodags gave up two power play goals in the first period, an even-strength goal in the second and one more power play goal in the third. Shots were 54-13 in favor of the Evergreens. Asher Rivord stopped 50 shots in the loss for Rhinelander. 


Rhinelander (1-9-0, 0-2-0-0 Great Northern) will take on the South Central (DeForest) co-op Friday to kick off the East-Merrill tournament in Merrill.


Boys’ swim: Rhinelander 130, Shawano 35; Rhinelander 128, Medford 37


The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team claimed all 11 events Tuesday as won both ends of its double dual in Medford, defeating the Raiders 128-37 and Shawano/Seymour 130-35. 


Dolan O’Malley was the Hdoags’ lone four-event winner. He took the 200- and 100-yard freestyle races individual and was part of the team’s winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. 


Shawn Denis claimed individual wins in the 50 and 500 freestyle; Dean Gillingham won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, Samson Shinners won the 200 individual medley and Mathias Fugle claimed the 100 breaststroke. In all, nine Hodags found the winner’s circle in at least one event. 


The Hodags will be back in action Saturday at the Jaguar Invite in Ashwaubenon.


Alpine skiing: Rhinelander/Northland Pines at Northern Conference Meet No. 1


The Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine Ski team opened its season Tuesday in the first Northern Conference meet of the season at Christie Mt. in Bruce. Official results had not been posted by the conference as of the time of this post.


The second conference race of the season is set for Monday, Jan. 13 at Granite Peak in Wausau.
