Pines co-op drops pair of road games
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op dropped back-to-back games road games last weekend, losing to the Badger Lightning 8-2 Friday in Baraboo and the Stoughton co-op Icebergs 1-0 Saturday in Stoughton.
The Lightning struck twice in the first period on Friday, tacked on four goals in the second and two more in the third as they outshot the Eagles 32-18. The Eagles scored twice in the third period, with a goal from Bessemer, Mich. sophomore Olivia Peterson and Northland Pines sophomore Lilly Beitler.
Northland Pines freshman Lucy Nowak and Rhinelander junior Jalyn Zadnik split time in goal during Friday’s contest. Nowak stopped nine shots and allowed three goals over 25 minutes while Zadnik made 16 saves in 26 minutes.
Saturday’s lone goal came courtesy of Hazel Rothering of the Icebergs midway through the first-period. It was the only blemish for Nowak, who made 37 saves in defeat. Pines mustered 21 shots on goal, seven in each period.
The losses dropped the Pines co-op to 2-7-0 on the season. The co-op includes six skaters from Rhinelander.
The Eagles’ four-game road trip continues tonight at Viroqua.
