RHS Sports recap: Saturday, Feb. 22

Wrestling: Rhinelander 12th/23, WIAA sectionals

Logan Schwinger is state tournament bound for the RHS wrestling team. The Hodag senior clinched his spot at the WIAA state meet by placing third Saturday in a Division 2 sectional in Amery.

After losing in the semifinals at 190 pounds, Schwinger (41-13) won back-to-back matches and locked up a state ticket with a pin over Ellsworth’s Sawyer Van Horn just 34 seconds into the third place bout. 

He was the only Hodag to advance as Reid Schultz (35-8) lost in the semifinals by a 4-2 decision to St. Croix Falls’ Logan Beckman and then was upset in the consolation semifinal round by Lakeland’s Tyrone Moore.

The WIAA state tournament gets underway Thursday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Gymnastics: Rhinelander 2nd/4, GNC Meet

The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team set another new season high Saturday at is came home second in Great Northern Conference Small division at the conference meet Saturday in Stevens Point.

The Hodags finished with 121.65 points, surpassing the season-high it set last week by more than a point. 

Sophomore Alexis Smith earned all-conference honors in two events, placing third on both the vault (8.2) and the floor exercise (8.4). She took sixth in the all-around with a 30.3. Freshman Emeline Hintz led the Hodags with a career-best all-around score of 31.4. She was fourth for the Hodags on the vault, and fifth on both uneven bars and balance beam. 

Sam Aschenbrenner was ninth in the all-around, Addison Fish took 10th and Wendy Fronk was 12th.

The Hodags will travel to Ashland next Saturday for WIAA Division 2 sectionals.
