UW-Madison’s Owen Finlay (2) prepares to leave the starting line of a USCSA college ski race at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) Saturday, Feb. 15. CAVOC hosted more than 70 collegiate skiers from around the midwest in a two-day race that included a classic sprint race on Saturday and a 10-kilometer freestyle race on Sunday. Henry Fischer of the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) won the men’s sprint race, while Liesl Cope-Schaeffer of St. Olaf (Minn.) College won the women’s sprint race. UW-Madison’s Anne Straka and St. Olaf’s Paavo Rova were the women’s and men’s winners in Sunday’s freestyle race. Mother Nature allowed the Northwoods Nordic Ski Club to hold one of its scheduled events this winter out at CAVOC after the Hodag Nordic Challenge for high school and middle school skiers was nixed back in January due to a lack of snow.
