RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Feb. 11


Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 49, Shawano 34


The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team shut down Shawano defensively and cruised to a 49-34 win over the Hawks in non-conference play Tuesday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


Rhinelander outscored Shawano 14-8 over the final 7:11 of the first half to take a 23-17 lead at the break and opened the second half on a 13-2 run to cement control in the contest. While Shawano shot 41% on the night, the Hawks were limited to just 33 field goal attempts.


Devon Feck and Evan Shoeder each scored 11 as Rhinelander shot 46% from the field. Logan Sipple paced the Hawks with 17.


Rhinelander (13-5, 7-2 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Friday.


Girls’ basketball: Shawano 52, Rhinelander 23


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team fell to Shawano 52-23 Tuesday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


The Hawks led wire-to-wire in the contest and took control with a 17-2 run in the second half after the Hodags had cut the lead down to eight. 


Vivian Lamers had nine points and nine rebounds to lead Rhinelander. Wisconsin recruit Leah Nordin paced Shawano with 19 points and 11 rebounds.


Rhinelander (12-9, 7-3 Great Northern) travels to Lakeland on Friday.


Boys’ hockey: Antigo 10, Rhinelander 2


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team scored the first and last goals on Tuesday, it was all Antigo in between as the Robins routed the Hodags 10-2 in the second round of the GNC tournament in Antigo.


Eli Kassler scored six times and had three assists while Owen Dickman scored three times for the Robins, who led 4-1 after a period and 7-1 after two. 


Dylan Shefveland opened the scoring for Rhinelander and Drake Nelson recorded his team-leading 10th goal of the season during the third period as the Hodags snapped a five-game scoreless streak.


Shots were 37-15 in favor of Antigo. Asher Rivord made 27 saves in defeat. 


Rhinelander (2-19-0, 0-9-0-0 Great Northern) will play in the seventh-place game of the GNC tournament against Medford in Rhinelander on Saturday, but first the Hodags will wrap up non-conference play at Chequamegon/Phillips on Thursday.


Gymnastics: Mosinee 118.425, Rhinelander 117.0


The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team was edged on the road 118.425-117.0 in GNC Small play Tuesday in Mosinee. 


The Hodags second-highest score of the season wasn’t enough against Mosinee, which posted a season high. 


Alexis Smith tied for first on the vault (8.35) and took third in the all-around with a career-high score of 30.4 points. Addison Fish finished fourth in the all-around and Lexi Skubal scored a runner-up finish for Rhinelander on balance beam.


The Hodags (1-2 Great Northern) will travel to Ashland for an invite on Saturday.
