David Nelson Tolsted

David Nelson Tolsted, age 90, of Rhinelander, died on Monday, February 3, 2025, at his home. He was born on October 26, 1934, in Fond du Lac, the son of Victor and Laura (Nelson) Tolsted.

He attended schools in the Adams/Friendship area, and grew up in Arkdale. After high school, David attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for two years. He was then drafted into the United States Army, where he served in Germany during the Cold War. Once discharged from the service, he finished his schooling at UW Stevens Point and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology.

After college he accepted a job with the Department of Agriculture in La Crosse. In 1976, he was transferred to the Forestry Sciences Lab in Rhinelander where he worked until his retirement in 1996. In his retirement, he did contract work for the University of Minnesota.

In 1968, he married Bernice Nelson in Necedah, and they shared nearly 60 wonderful years together.

David enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, and cribbage. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.

David is survived by his wife Bernice, his grandson Ryder Nelson Tummett, his daughter-in-law Kara Tolsted, other family, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Christine Tolsted-Tummett, his son Mark Tolsted, and his parents.

A memorial service will take place for David on Friday, February 7, 2025 at the Carlson Funeral Home at noon with a visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place at the Northwoods National Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers you may direct your memorials to the family.
