RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Feb. 4
Boys’ basketball: Wausau West 56, Rhinelander 47
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team wasn’t able to keep up on the road Tuesday night, falling to Wausau West 56-47 in non-conference play.
The Hodags trailed 25-24 at halftime, but the Warriors pulled away to a double-digit lead in the second half as Rhinelander struggled from the field. The Hodags were just 4 of 26 on the night from 3-point range.
Devon Feck led the Hodags with 16 points and Abe Gretzinger added 10 off the bench. Griffin Lange scored 18 to led three Warriors in double figures.
Rhinelander (11-5, 6-2 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Friday.
Girls’ basketball: Stevens Point 54, Rhinelander 38
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team fell at home of Wisconsin Valley Conference-leading Stevens Point 54-38 on Tuesday night.
The Hodags trailed 13-11 with just over 9 minutes to play in the first half but the Panthers closed on a 17-4 run to lead 30-15 at the break and pushed the lead to 24 by the halfway point of the second.
Vivian Lamers scored 12 points to lead Rhinelander. Jada Seubert led three Panthers in double figures with 15.
Rhinelander (11-8, 6-3 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Tomahawk 9, Rhinelander 0
The RHS boys’ hockey team fell to top-ranked Tomahawk 9-0 Tuesday in the first round of the Great Northern Conference tournament at SARA Park.
The Hatchets led 4-0 after a period, tacked on two goals in the second period and three more in the third. Further details were not available as of the time of this post.
Rhinelander (2-17-0) will face Antigo in the consolation semifinals of the GNC tournament next Tuesday, but first it will skate at home against Kingsford, Mich. on Thursday.
Gymnastics: Rhinelander 114.425, Antigo 112.225
The Rhinelander High School gymnastics team pulled off a 2.2-point victory in GNC Small Division play on Tuesday, defeating Antigo 114.425-112.225 at the YMCA of the Northwoods.
The Hodags won despite leading all-around Emeline Hintz missing the meet after sustaining a knee injury at practice Monday. Senior Wendy Fronk stepped in, in the all-around, taking second there with a 28.65. She won the floor exercise for he Hodags and was the runner-up on the balance beam.
Alexis Smith won the vault for Rhinelander. Samantha Aschenbrenner was fourth in the all-around (27.425), highlighted by a runner-up finish on the floor.
Rhinelander (1-1) will travel to Marshfield for an invite on Saturday.
Wrestling: Antigo 46, Rhinelander 27
The Rhinelander High School wrestling team fell at Antigo 46-27 in a battle for second place in the GNC on Tuesday night.
The Hodags won four of the nine contested matches in the dual and gave up three forfeits. Reid Schultz and Ivan Loka earned pins for Rhinelander, Logan Schwinger won by technical fall and Anthony Boldt earned a major decision.
The loss put Rhinelander and Antigo in a tie for second in the GNC standings, two points ahead of Medford and Mosinee, going into Saturday’s GNC tournament at Lakeland.
