RHS Sports recap: Monday, Dec. 22
Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 50, Wis. Rapids Assumption 22
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team notched its biggest win of the season Monday night, pulling away in the second half to defeat No. 2 (D5) Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 50-22 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags went on a 20-0 run after Assumption took a 17-15 lead early in the second and cruised the rest of the way. Vivian Lamers scored 12 of her game-high 13 points for the Hodags after halftime, Teagan Clark added 12 points and Aubryn Clark had 11.
Rhinelander led 15-13 at the break, despite shooting only 20% from the field in the first half. The Hodags were 48% (14 of 29) in the second half and held the Royals to 22.5% shooting overall, while forcing 26 turnovers.
Breanna Aue led Assumption with eight points. Jordan Jaglinski, who averaged 21.7 points per game entering the night, was held to five in the contest.
Rhinelander (5-4, 2-2 Great Northern) vill face St. Croix Central in Menomonie Dec. 29.
Boys’ hockey: D.C. Everest 12, Rhinelander 0
The Rhineladner High School boys’ hockey team fell behind quickly on Monday and was defeated 12-0 by D.C. Everest at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
The Evergreens scored six times in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the contest and didn’t look back, extending the lead to 8-0 after a period. Everest scored four more times in the second. Hayden Johnson had four goals for Everest, while Cole VanSlyke had three goals and an assist.
Everest outshot Rhinelander 55-14 in the game. Connor McGee made 43 saves in defeat.
Rhinelander (0-8-0, 0-4-0-0 Great Northern) will face Manistique, Mich. Dec. 29 during a holiday tournament at the Rhinelander Ice Arena.
