RHS Sports recap: Friday, Dec. 19


Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 60, Northland Pines 55


Devon Feck’s hot shooting continued for the Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team. The senior made seven 3s for a second straight game and scored a game-high 24 points as the Hodags held off Northland Pines 60-55 in a battle of GNC unbeatens Friday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


Eighteen of Feck’s points came in the first half as the Hodags rallied from down nine early to build an 11-point lead before taking a 34-26 advantage to the break. Pines whittled away the lead, going up 47-46 on a Tyler Vojta make with 7:55 left. The teams then traded the lead five more times before the Hodags pulled away, holding the Eagles without a field goal over the final 4 minutes of the game. 


Abe Gretzinger had 11 points for Rhinelander while Rowan Wiczek chipped in nine. Mylo Albrecht matched Feck, scoring 24 to lead the Eagles. 


Rhinelander (6-1, 3-0 Great Northern) is idle until Dec. 30, when it will host Waupaca.


Girls’ basketball: Rhinelander 54, Northland Pines 25


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team wore down Northland Pines, forcing 36 turnovers as it defeated the Eagles 54-25 in GNC play Friday night at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.


Rhinlelander got hot late in the first half, closing on an 11-0 run over the final 2:40 to take a 28-11 lead to the break. Rhinealnder extended the lead to as many as 33 in the second half.


Teagan Clark led the Hodags with 20 points, including a 5 of 8 night from 3-point range. Teagan Clark added 17 for the Hodags. Natalie Kohn paced Northland Pines with nine points and 11 rebounds. 


Rhinelander (4-4, 2-2 Great Northern) hosts Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Monday.


Wrestling: RHS girls 9th/22, boys 21st/25, Hodag Scramble


Cassidy Lindner came home a champion at her home invite on Friday, winning the girls’ 132-pound weight class in the Hodag Scramble at the Hodag Dome. Lindner’s title helped the Hodag girls take ninth in a 22-team field while the Hodag boys were 21st out of 25 teams. 


Lindner went 5-0 on the day, with three pins in the preliminary rounds. She beat Plymouth’s Valerie Mathisen 3-1 in the semifinals and Merrill’s Kendell Klug 14-10 in the finals. Miranda Daab added a fourth-place finial for Rhinelander at 235, Nevaeh Anderson was fifth at 165 and Katie Hazelton and Skylar Leitl were sixth each at 132 and 152.


Ivan Loka had the best finish for the Hodag boys, taking seventh at 132 while Michael Tredupp and Gage Anderson was eighth at 126 and 157, respectively.


The Hodag girls will return to action Jan. 3 at Shiocton while the Hodag boys are idle until Jan. 8 when they will host Tomahawk in a GNC dual meet.
