RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Dec. 16
Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 61, Wausau West 38
Devon Feck made seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 25 points as Rhinelander defeated Wausau West 61-38 in non-conference play Tuesday at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Feck was 7 of 8 from 3-point range and 8 of 10 overall to lead all scorers. After giving up an 8-0 run to start the game, the Hodags scored the next 13 and never looked back, extending the lead to 33-18 at halftime and 60-30 with 4:42 remaining.
Jatyn Barkus added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Hodags while Evan Shoeder had eight points and eight rebounds. Will Stengl scored 12 off the bench to lead the Warriors.
Rhinelander (5-1, 2-0 Great Northern) host Northland Pines on Friday.
Girls’ basketball: Stevens Point 61, Rhinelander 32
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team couldn’t keep up with No. 9 (D1) Stevens Point on Tuesday, falling to the Panthers 61-32 in a non-conference matchup in Stevens Point.
The Panthers led virtually wire-to-wire in the contest and were up 31-12 at the break. Aubryn Clark led the Hdoags with 20 points while Vivian Lamers chipped in seven. Jada Seubert led three Panthers in double figures with 20 points while Leah Awe added 18.
Rhinelander (3-4, 1-2 Great Northern) hosts Northland Pines on Friday.
Boys’ hockey: Antigo 6, Rhinelander 2
The RHS boys’ hockey team gave up three unanswered goals in the second period, which proved to be the difference in a 6-2 loss to Antigo in GNC play on the road Tuesday night.
The Hodags trailed 3-1 after a period and goal a goal from Jack Turek 1:32 into the second to make it a one-goal game, but the Robins scored on the power play, at even strength and short-handed in the second period to pull away. Ethan Novy scored three times in the game from the Robins.
Drake Nelson had Rhinelander’s first period goal. The Hodags outshot Antigo 34-29 in defeat. Connor McGee made 23 saves in the loss.
Rhinelander (0-7-0, 0-4-0-0 Great Northern) will host D.C. Everest Monday, Dec. 22 in non-conference play.
Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 136, Lakeland 16
The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won all 11 events in a 136-16 victory over a short-handed Lakeland squad Tuesday night during a GNC dual meet in Minocqua.
Eleven different Hodags played a role in at least one victory, led by Judson O’Malley, Kellen O’Malley and Dean Gillingham, who had three wins each. Judson O’Malley took the 200 and 100 freestyle, Kellen O’Malley won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Gillingham claimed the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly and all three were on a winning relay.
Daniel Meier added a win for Rhinelander in the 500 freestyle and Charlie Antonuk took the 100 breaststroke.
Rhinelander (3-0 Great Northern) hosts Tomahawk to round out GNC dual meet play on Thursday.
Girls’ wrestling: Rhinelander 6th/9, GNC/WVC Challenge
The Rhinelander High School girls’ wrestling team placed sixth out of nine teams in the first Great Northern/Wisconsin Valley conference challenge match Tuesday at Wausau East High School.
Cassidy Lindner won both of her matches on the night, scoring a pin and a technical fall. Katie Hazelton and Shyanne Hueckstaedt each won one match and placed second in their three-wrestler brackets. Miranda Daab was second in a two-person bracket and Skylar Leitl took third in her three-person bracket.
Rhinelander will be back in action Friday when it hosts the Hodag Scramble at the Hodag Dome.
