Barnett declares candidacy for mayor

Thomas Barnett, District 1 alderperson on the Rhinelander city council, announced Dec. 4 on Facebook he’s putting his hat in the ring to be the city’s next mayor.

According to the city’s website, he’s the only person to declare candidacy for mayor so far. City clerk Austyn Zarda told The Northwoods River News on Dec. 5, prospective candidates have until Jan. 6, 2026 to declare for candidacy.

Current mayor Kris Hanus, he said, will have to declare for candidacy if he decides to pursue re-election. 

“I’ve been honored to serve as your District 1 Alderperson for the past 6 years, and in that time, I’ve learned so much about the heart and potential of our beautiful city,” Barnett said on his Facebook post. “I love Rhinelander and care deeply about its success, which is why I’m taking this step.”

He said he’s been asked “Why?” many times. 

“My run for Mayor is about looking forward. It’s about building a positive, productive path for Rhinelander's future,” Barnett said. “I am simply not interested in dirty politics, negative commentary, or resorting to games. My focus will be 100% on moving our city forward in a positive light — tackling real issues like affordable housing and finding fresh, creative ways to grow our community. My commitment is to transparent, respectful, and results-driven leadership. I hope the citizens of Rhinelander will join me in embracing this positive vision for our city. Let’s focus on what we can achieve together!”

Also, notably, according to the city’s website, District 6 alderperson David Holt has declared his non-candidacy and won’t be seeking re-election.
