RHS Sports recap: Friday, Dec. 5
Boys’ basketball: Rhinelander 71, Medford 57
The Rhinelander High School boys’ basketball team inched away in the second half on Friday and defeated Medford 71-57 in the Great Northern Conference opener at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Devon Feck scored 23 points to lead all scorers, including three Hodags in double figures. Jatyn Barkus added 15 points and Abe Gretzinger had 14 as Rhinealdner shot 47% (23 of 49) on the night.
Nick Krause paced Medford with 18 points, Peyton Ried had 14 and Devin Dassow chipped in 11 as Medford shot 45% (21 of 47 on the night).
Rhinelander took the lead for good on a Gretzinger basket with 11:32 remaining in the first half, led by as many as eight in the first half and took a 39-35 advantage to half. Medford got within a possession on three separate occasions in the second, but the Hodags used a key 11-3 run to go up 62-50 with 6:12 remaining.
Rhinelander (3-0, 0-0 Great Northern) travels to Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Tuesday.
Girls’ basketball: Medford 55, Rhinelander 45
The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team couldn’t overcome yet another cold shooting night on Friday as it fell to Medford 55-45 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags were just 3 of 21 from the field in the first half as they fell behind 23-12 at the break. Medford opened the second half with an 8-0 run and played with a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the contest. Rhinelander got within 33-25 with 10:41 remaining, but the Raiders, who were 10 of 14 from the field in the second half, answered with a 13-3 run.
Aubryn Clark scored 21 points to lead Rhinelander while Vivian Lamers had 10. The Hodags finished 27% (15 of 55) from the field and were 6 of 28 from distance. Taylor Klingbeil paced Medford with 20 points, Rylee Hraby added 16 and Kayla Baumgartner had 11 as the Raiders shot 49% (18 of 37) in the contest.
Rhinelander (2-3, 0-2 Great Northern) returns to action Dec. 12 at Antigo.
Girls’ wrestling: Rhinealnder 17th/30, Antigo Invite
The Rhinelander High School wrestling team sent five girls to the mat Friday as it took 17th place in the Antigo Invite.
Junior Cassidy Lindner went 4-1 on the night and was the runner-up at 126 pounds, falling in the championship match to Cadott’s Tessa York. Nevaeh Anderson won two matches and finished 10th at 165, Katie Hazelton won a match and was 12th at 132. Miranda Daab took ninth at 235 and Skylar Leitl was 12th at 152.
The Hodags boys will be in Antigo on Saturday while the Hodag girls will return to action Dec. 13 in Crandon.
