RHS Sports recap: Tuesday, Dec. 2


Girls’ basketball: Mosinee 43, Rhinelander 32


The Rhinelander High School girls’ basketball team struggled offensively in the second half and fell to Mosinee 43-32 in the Great Northern Conference opener Tuesday night in Rhinelander. 


Leading 21-14 at halftime, the Hodags went just 4 of 29 from the field in the second half and were held scoreless over the final 8:36 of the contest as Mosinee finished the game on a 14-3 run. 


Sisters Aubryn and Teagan Clark were a combined 1 for 20 in the second half and scored three points. They both had 10 overall in the game to lead Rhinelander. Vivian Lamers added seven points and seven rebounds. 


Addy Henrich led Mosinee with 13 points and 10 rebounds. 


Rhinelander (2-2, 0-1 Great Northern) hosts Medford on Friday.


Boys’ hockey: Northland Pines 14, Rhinelander 1


The Rhinelander High School boys’ hockey team could not keep up with Northland Pines, falling to the Eagles 14-1 in the GNC opener Tuesday night at the Rhinelander Ice Arena. 


The Eagles led 3-0 after a period, 8-0 after two and tacked on six more goals in the third. Drake Nelson had Rhinelander’s lone tally late in the third period as the Hodags were outshot 62-13 in the contest. Connor McGee made 48 saves in defeat.


Rhinelander (0-2-0, 0-1-0-0 Great Northern) travels to Tomahawk on Thursday.


Boys’ swimming: Rhinelander 119, Shawano/Seymour 51


The Rhinelander High School boys’ swim team won 10 of 11 events on Tuesday and defeated Shawano/Seymour 119-51 in the GNC opener in Shawano. 


Judson O’Malley, Dean Gillingman and Charlie Antonuk were all four-event winners for the Hodags. O’Malley claimed the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke, Gillingham took the 200 and 500 freestyle while Antonuk won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. All three were also on a pair of winning relays. 


Broden Wagner added a win in the 100 breaststroke and the Hodags had eight different swimmers play a role in at least one victory.


Rhinelander (1-0, 1-0 Great Northern) travels to Stevens Point Dec. 9 for a non-conference dual that will also include Wausau East.
